These silly potatoes and emotional support pickles bring a smile to everyone’s faces and can be customized to hold whatever sign you want to give them!
Adding a small amount of crafting or floral wire into the arms helps to make the little characters able to hold their sign or item while keeping it interchangeable. I like to add two signs to mine so that people can change it if they feel like it. Alternatively, if you don’t have craft wire or don’t want the sign to be changed, you can just glue or tack the sign in place with a couple of stitches.
Positive Potato
Supplies Needed: 3.25 mm hook, mushroom colored yarn, small safety eyes (6 mm), small amount of black embroidery floss, poly-fil stuffing, floral wire (optional), a silly sign (preferably printed on cardstock so that it is more sturdy).
Stitch Abbreviations: sc – single crochet, sc2tog – single crochet two together, slst – slip stitch.
*Any rounds featuring * * around a group of stitches indicates that you are to repeat from the first * to the second for the entire round or specified number of repetitions.*
**Alternative to magic ring: ch 2, complete the written number of stitches (example: 6 sc) into the second chain from hook, then continue on with pattern as written.**
Body (mushroom yarn)
Round 1: magic ring – 6 sc.
Round 2: 2 sc in each stitch around.
Round 3: *2 sc in first stitch, 1 sc in next*
Round 4: *1 sc in each of the first 2 stitches, 2 sc in the next stitch* (24 stitches)
Round 5: sc in each stitch around.
Round 6: *2 sc in first stitch, 1 sc in each of the next 7 stitches* (27 stitches)
Round 7 – Round 11: sc in each stitch around.
Round 12: *sc2tog, 1 sc in each of the next 7 stitches*
Round 13: *1 sc in each of the first 2 stitches, sc2tog* (18 stitches)
Round 14 – Round 16: sc in each stitch around.
Insert safety eyes between rounds 13 and 14, 2 stitches apart. Add stuffing.
Round 17: *sc2tog, 1 sc in next stitch*
Use black embroidery floss to add a cute smile to your positive potato!
Round 18: sc2tog around.
Fasten off, weave the tail into the remaining stitches to close the top of the potato.
Arms (make 2 using mushroom yarn)
Round 1: magic ring – 4 sc.
Round 2 – Round 5: sc in each stitch around.
Fasten off, leave tail for sewing to body. If using wire for the arms, stick through the body wherever you would like the arms to land (I usually place them around rounds 9/10). The wire should be long enough to stick out on both sides of the body just slightly. When it is placed where you like, open up the arms and stick them on the ends of the wire before sewing round 5 of each arm to the body.
Now create a cute sign for your positive potato to hold and he will be ready to go brighten someone’s day! My usual go to signs are pictured above. I used the table setting on Microsoft Word to create them.
