Valentina the Valentine’s Day Elephant

Supplies Needed: gray yarn, pink yarn, light blue yarn, small amount of red, green, and purple yarn, a pair of 15 mm safety eyes, 3.5 mm crochet hook, yarn needle, and poly-fil stuffing.

Abbreviations Used: sc – single crochet, sc2tog – single crochet 2 together, slst – slip stitch, hdc – half double crochet, bobble – bobble stitch/4 dc in one stitch, dc – double crochet, trc – treble crochet, BLO – back loop only.

Finished Size: using a 3.5 mm hook, the elephant measures about 8 inches.

Head (gray yarn)

Round 1: magic ring – sc 6.

Round 2: 2 sc in each stitch around.

Round 3: *2 sc in the first stitch, 1 sc in the next* repeat * to * around. (18 stitches)

Round 4: *2 sc in the  first stitch, 1 sc in each of the next 2 stitches* repeat * to * around. (24 stitches)

Round 5: *2 sc in the first stitch, 1 sc in each of the next 3 stitches* repeat * to * around. (30 stitches)

Round 6: *1 sc in each of the next 4 stitches, 2 sc in the next stitch* repeat * to * around. (36 stitches)

Round 7: sc each of the first 2 stitches, 2 sc in the next stitch, *1 sc in each of the next 5 stitches, 2 sc in the next stitch* repeat * to * around until 3 stitches are left, sc in each of the last 3 stitches. (42 stitches)

Round 8: *2 sc in the first stitch, 1 sc in each of the next 6 stitches* repeat * to * around. (48 stitches)

Round 9 – Round 18: sc around.

Secure safety eyes between rounds 11 and 12, with 5 stitches between them.

Round 19: *sc2tog, sc in each of the next 6 stitches* repeat * to * around. (42 stitches)

Trunk (gray yarn)

Round 1: magic ring – 6 sc.

Round 2: *2 sc in first stitch, 1 sc in the next* repeat * to * around. (9 stitches)

Round 3: BLO sc around.

Round 4 – Round 5: sc around.

Round 6 – Round 8: sc2tog, sc each of the next 3 stitches, 2 hdc in the same stitch, sc last 3 stitches.

Round 9: sc around.
Round 10 – Round 12: 2 hdc in first stitch, sc each of the next 3 stitches, sc2tog, sc each of the last 3 stitches.

Round 13: sc around.

Round 14: 2 sc in each stitch around. (18 stitches)

Round 15: *2 sc in first stitch, 1 sc in the next stitch* repeat * to * around. (27 stitches)

Fasten off, leave tail for sewing onto head. 

Add stuffing to trunk and sew to head between rounds 13 and 18.

Arms (pink yarn, make 2)

Round 1: magic ring: 6 sc.

Round 2: 2 sc in each stitch around.

Round 3: *2 sc in first stitch, 1 sc in the next* repeat * to * around. (18 stitches)

Round 4: *2 sc in first stitch, 1 sc in each of the next 5 stitches* repeat * to * around. (21 stitches)

Change to gray yarn.

Round 5: BLO sc each of the first 3 stitches, *change to pink yarn, bobble, change to gray yarn, sc each of the next 2 stitches,* repeat * to * a total of 3 times, sc each of the last 9 stitches.

Round 6 – Round 7: sc around.

Change to light blue yarn.

Round 8: *sc2tog, sc each of the next 5 stitches* repeat * to * around. (18 stitches)

Round 9: BLO sc around.

Round 10: sc around.

Round 11: *sc2tog, sc each of the next 4 stitches* repeat * to * around. (15 stitches)

Round 12 – Round 13: sc around.

Round 14: *sc2tog, sc each of the next 3 stitches* repeat * to * around. (12 stitches)

Round 15: sc around.

Stuff the arm lightly.

Round 16: sc 2, pinch the sides of round 15 together, sc 4 through both sides of round 15 to close the top of the arm.

Fasten off, leave a short tail.

Sleeve Cuffs (light blue yarn, make 2)

Round 1: attach yarn to round 9 of arm, FLO hdc in each stitch around.

Fasten off, weave in ends.

Body (gray yarn)

Round 1: magic ring – 6 sc.

Round 2: 2 sc in each stitch around.

Round 3: *2 sc in first stitch, 1 sc in next* repeat * to * around. (18 stitches)

Round 4: *2 sc in first stitch, 1 sc in each of the next 2* repeat * to * around. (24 stitches)

Round 5: *2 sc in first stitch, 1 sc in each of the next 3 stitches* repeat * to * around. (30 stitches)

Round 6: sc each of the first 2 stitches, 2 sc in the next stitch, *sc each of the next 4 stitches, 2 sc in the next stitch* repeat * to * around until 2 stitches remain, sc each of the last 2 stitches. (36 stitches)

Round 6: *sc2tog, sc each of the next 6 stitches* repeat * to * around. (42 stitches)

Round 10 – Round 11: sc around.
