Re-Purpose those Plastic Shopping Bags into Something New!

Lets finally use those old plastic shopping bags that are taking up space in your house to make something functional! Make your own “plarn” and create a fun new reusable shopping bag.

Plarn Grocery Bag

Supplies Needed: plarn, 6.0 mm hook, yarn needle.

Stitch Abbreviations: sc – single crochet, hdc – half double crochet, inc- 2 single crochet in the same stitch, ch – chain, slst – slip stitch, BLO – back loop only.

Bag (worked in rounds)

Round 1: ch 21, begin stitches in second chain from hook, inc, sc 18, inc 4 times, continue working stitches along the back of the foundation chain, sc 18, inc in final stitch.

Round 2: inc 2 times, sc 18, inc 4 times, sc 18, inc 2 times.

Round 3: sc 3, ch 2, sc 21, ch 2, sc 5, ch 2, sc 21, ch 2, sc 2.

Round 4: hdc 3, hdc inc in chain space, hdc 21, hdc inc in chain space, hdc 5, hdc inc in chain space, hdc 21, hdc inc in chain space, hdc 2.

Round 5: hdc 4, ch 2, hdc 21, ch 2, hdc 9, ch 2, hdc 21, ch 2, hdc 5.

Round 6: sc 4, inc in chain space, sc 21, inc in chain space, sc 8, inc in chain space, sc 21, inc in chain space, sc 5.

Round 7: sc 5, ch 2, sc 22, ch 2, sc 9, ch 2, sc 22, ch 2, sc 4.

Round 8: sc 5, inc in chain space, sc 22, inc in chain space, sc 9, inc in chain space, sc 22, inc in chain space, sc 4, slst to first stitch of round.

The base of the bag is completed, now we will work on building up the sides.

Round 9: BLO sc around.

Round 10 – Round 34: sc around. On last round, end with a slst to the first stitch of the round.

Fasten off, weave in ends using the yarn needle.

Mark where you would like your straps to be placed. I sew mine on with about 18 stitches between them.

Straps (worked in rows, make 2)

Row 1: Leaving a tail for sewing to the bag, ch 5, begin stitches in 2nd chain from hook, sc 4, ch 1, turn.

Row 2 – Row 39: sc 4, ch 1, turn.

Check your strap length, if you want a longer strap continue working row 2 until you reach the desired length.

Row 40: sc 4 across.

Fasten off, leave a tail for sewing onto the bag. After sewing the straps onto the bag, weave in ends.
