Move it Football Head! It’s Time to Make Your Own Helga Pataki!

Supplies Needed: 3.75 mm hook, 8 mm safety eyes, buff yarn, white yarn, pink yarn, yellow yarn, red yarn, poly-fil stuffing

Stitch Abbreviations Used: sc – single crochet, bobble – bobble stitch (4 dc stitches together), ch – chain, slst – slip stitch, sc2tog – single crochet 2 together, hdc – half double crochet, FLO – front loop only, BLO – back loop only.

Arm (buff yarn, make 2)

Round 1: magic ring – 6 sc.

Round 2: 2 sc in each stitch around. (12 stitches)

Round 3: sc in each stitch around.

Round 4: bobble, sc in each of the next 11.

Round 5: *sc2tog, sc next* repeat * to * around. (8 stitches)

Round 6 – Round 14: sc in each stitch around.

Fasten off, weave in ends.

Sleeves (white yarn, make 2)

Round 1: ch 15, slst to first chain to join in ring, sc in each stitch around. (15 stitches)

Round 2: sc in each stitch around.

Round 3: *sc2tog, sc next* repeat * to * around. (10 stitches)

Round 4: *sc next 3 stitches, sc2tog* repeat * to * around. (8 stitches)

Put the sleeve over the arm so that round 4 of sleeve aligns with round 14 of arm.

Round 5: stuff the arm lightly, flatten the arm and sleeve together to close in a straight line complete stitches between front and back of arm to close, sc2tog, sc next 2.

Fasten off, weave in ends.

Feet/Legs (white yarn, make 2)

Round 1: ch 5, begin stitches in 2nd chain from hook, sc first 3 stitches, 4 sc in last chain, turn to work along back of foundation chain, sc 3.

Round 2: 2 sc in first stitch, sc each of the next 3 stitches, 2 sc in each of the next 2 stitches, sc each of the next 3 stitches, 2 sc in final stitch. (14 stitches)

Round 3: 2 sc in each of the first 3 stitches, sc each of the next 2 stitches, 2 sc in each of the next 5 stitches, sc each of the next 2 stitches, 2 sc in each of the last 2 stitches. (24 stitches)

Round 4: sc in each stitch around.

Round 5: sc each of the first 9 stitches, hdc2tog 4 times, sc each of the last 7 stitches.

Round 6: sc each of the first 7 stitches, sc2tog 4 times, sc each of the last 5 stitches. (16 stitches)

Round 7: sc each of the first 5 stitches, sc2tog 4 times, sc each of the last 3 stitches. (12 stitches)

Change to buff yarn.

Round 8: BLO sc in each stitch around.

Round 9 – Round 20: sc in each stitch around.

Fasten off.

Body/Head (pink yarn)

Round 1: ch 7, begin working in 2nd chain from hook, 2 sc in first stitch, sc each of the next 4 stitches, 4 sc in final chain, turn to continue working along the opposite side of the foundation chain, sc each of the next 4 stitches, 2 sc in final chain.

Round 2: 2 sc in first stitch, sc each of the next 6 stitches, 2 sc in each of the next 2 stitches, sc each of the next 6 stitches, 2 sc in final stitch.

Round 3: hdc in first stitch, 2 hdc in next stitch, hdc each of the next 7 stitches, 2 hdc, 1 hdc, 2 hdc, hdc each of the next 7 stitches, 2 hdc in last stitch of round. (24 stitches)

Round 4: hdc in first stitch, 2 hdc in each of the next 2 stitches, hdc next 7 stitches, 2 hdc each of the next 2 stitches, 1 hdc, 2 hdc in each of the next 2 stitches, hdc each of the next 7 stitches, 2 hdc in each of the next 2 stitches. (32 stitches)

Change to red yarn.

Round 5: BLO sc around.

Round 6: sc around.

Change to pink yarn.

Round 7: *sc2tog, sc next 14* repeat * to * around. (30 stitches)

Round 8 – Round 9: sc around.

Round 10: *sc2tog, sc next 8* repeat * to * around. (27 stitches)

Round 11 – Round 12: sc around.

Change to white yarn.

Round 13: BLO *sc2tog, sc next 7* repeat * to * around. (24 stitches)

Round 14: sc first 9, complete the next 3 stitches holding one arm up to the body to attach the two together, sc 3 through arm and body at the same time, sc next 9, complete the next 3 stitches holding one arm up to the body to attach the two together, sc 3 through arm and body at the same time.

Round 15: *sc2tog, sc next 2* repeat * to * around. (18 stitches)

Round 16: *sc2tog, sc next 4* repeat * to * around. (15 stitches)

Round 17: FLO sc around.

Round 18 – Round 19: sc around.

Change to buff yarn.

Round 20: work this rounds stitches through both the front loop of round 19 and the back loop of round 17, *sc2tog, sc next stitch* repeat * to * around. (10 stitches)

Round 21 – Round 22: sc around.

Round 23: 2 sc in each stitch around.

Round 24: *2 sc in first stitch, sc in next* repeat * to * around. (30 stitches)

Round 25: *sc first 2 stitches, 2 sc in next, sc next 2* repeat * to * around. (36 stitches)

Round 26: *2 sc in first stitch, sc next 5* repeat * to * around. (42 stitches)

Round 27 – Round 36: sc around.

Round 37: *sc2tog, sc next 5* repeat * to * around.

Round 38: *sc first 2, sc2tog, sc next 2* repeat * to * around. (30 stitches)

Round 39: *sc2tog, sc next 3* repeat * to * around.

Round 40: *sc first stitch, sc2tog, sc next stitch* repeat * to * around. (18 stitches)

Round 41: *sc2tog, sc next stitch* repeat * to * around.

Round 42: sc2tog around. (6 stitches)

Fasten off, use tail to weave the remaining stitches closed.

Eyes (make 2, white yarn)

Round 1: magic ring – 4 sc, ch 1, turn

Round 2: *2 sc in first stitch, sc next* repeat * to * across.

Fasten off, leave long strand of yarn for sewing onto head. Add safety eye to middle of magic ring.

Eyebrow (black yarn)

Row 1: ch 2, begin working in 2nd chain from hook, sc, pick up eye 1, sc 4 across flat top of eye, pick up eye 2, sc 2 across flat top of eye, ch 2, sc in 2nd chain from hook.

Fasten off, leave a long strand of yarn for sewing to head. Place the eyes and eyebrow into the head, slightly curved so that the ends of the eyebrow touch round 35 of the head. Sew the eyes and eyebrow in place.

Nose (buff yarn)

Round 1: magic ring – 6 sc.

Round 2: sc around.

Fasten off, leave tail for sewing to head beginning in the space between the curve of the eyes.

Ears (make 2, buff yarn)

Round 1: magic ring – 6 sc.

Round 2: 2 sc in each stitch around.

Round 3 – Round 5: sc around.

Round 6: pinch the ears to flatten work stitches through front and back of round to close in a straight line, sc2tog, sc next 2, sc2tog.

Fasten off, leave tail for sewing to head so that the bottom of each ear is touching round 25 of the head.

Skirt (pink yarn)

Round 1: attach yarn to unworked front loops on round 5 of body, sc in each stitch around.

Round 2 – Round 5: sc in each stitch around, at the end of round 5 slst to first stitch of round 5.

Fasten off, weave in ends.

Straps (make 2, pink yarn)

Row 1: attach yarn to unworked front loops of round 14 of body just in front of arm, sc 4 stitches, ch 1, turn.

Row 2: sc 4 stitches, ch 1, turn.

Row 3: sc2tog 2 times, ch 1, turn.

Row 4: sc 2, ch 1, turn.

Row 5: 2 sc 2 times, ch 1, turn.

Row 6: sc 4 stitches.

Fasten off, lay strap over doll’s shoulder, use a yarn needle and yarn tail to sew to back side of body using the unworked front loops of round 14. Repeat to create opposite strap.

Hair (yellow yarn)

Round 1: magic ring – 6 sc.

Round 2 – Round 3: 2 sc in each stitch around.

Round 4: *2 sc in first stitch, sc next 3* repeat * to * around. (30 stitches)

Round 5: *sc first 2 stitches, 2 sc in next stitch, sc next 2 stitches* repeat * to * around. (36 stitches)

Round 6: *2 sc in first stitch, sc next 5 stitches* repeat * to * around.

Round 7: *sc first 3 stitches, 2 sc in next, sc next 3* repeat * to * around. (48 stitches)

Round 8 – Round 10: sc around, at the end of round 10, slst to first stitch of round 10.

Round 11 – Round 13: ch 1, sc next 30, turn, leave remaining stitches of round 10 unworked.

Fasten off, leave a long tail for sewing to top of head.

Bangs (make 2, yellow yarn)

Round 1: attach yarn to unworked stitches of round 10 beginning at first unworked stitch, sc 8, ch 1, turn.

Round 2: sc 8, ch 1, turn.

Round 3: sc 8.

Fasten off, weave in ends. Repeat for opposite side of bangs starting at the opposite end of round 10.

Ponytails (make 2, yellow yarn)

Round 1: ch 13, begin stitches in 2nd chain from hook, 2 sc in first stitch, sc next 10, 4 sc in last chain, turn to continue working on opposite side of foundation chain, sc 10, 2 sc in final chain.

Round 2- Round 3: sc around.

Round 4: *sc2tog, sc next 10, sc2tog* repeat * to * around.

Round 5- Round 6: sc around.

Round 7: *sc2tog, sc next 8, sc2tog* repeat * to * around.

Round 8 – Round 11: sc around.

Round 12: *sc2tog, sc next 6, sc2tog* repeat * to * around.

Round 13: flatten to work through front and back of round at the same time to close, sc2tog, sc next 4, sc2tog.

Fasten off, leave a tail for sewing to back of head so that each ponytail sticks out on the sides of the head.

Bow (pink yarn)

Row 1: ch 8, begin working in 2nd chain from hook, sc 7, ch 1, turn.

Row 2 – Row 39: sc 7, ch 1, turn.

Row 40: sc 7.

Row 41: bring together foundation chain and row 40 stitches, slst 7 to connect.

Fasten off, weave in ends.

Bow Band (pink yarn)

Row 1: ch 8, begin stitches in 2nd chain from hook, sc 7, ch 1, turn.

Row 2: sc 7.

Fasten off, leave a tail for sewing around the bow at its center to cinch it into the bow shape.

Sew the bow to the top of the head.
