I love Lily Sugar ‘n Cream Cotton yarn for all sorts of projects! I always have some in my yarn stash for baby drool bibs, Swiffer covers, and especially market bags.

Today we’re making a quick, easy, and re-usable striped market bag, perfect for holiday grocery trips or for gifting to a farmer’s market regular!

Striped Market Bag

Supplies Needed: 5.0 (H) hook, 3 skeins (120 yards each) of Lily Sugar ‘n Cream Cotton Yarn (1 skein of Color 1, 2 skeins of Color 2), yarn needle.

Stitch Abbreviations Used: ch – chain, hdc – half double crochet, sc – single crochet, slst – slip stitch, trc – treble crochet.

Bag (beginning with Color 1, bag worked in rounds starting at the bottom)

Round 1: ch 41, begin stitches in the 2nd chain from hook, sc 39 along the foundation chain, 2 sc in the final chain, turn work to continue working along the opposite side of the foundation chain, sc 39.

Round 2: 2 sc in first stitch, hdc each of the next 38, 2 sc in each of the next 2 stitches, hdc next 38, 2 sc in last stitch of round.

Round 3: hdc first 3 stitches, 2 hdc in each of the next 2 stitches, hdc next 38, 2 hdc in each of the next 2 stitches, hdc following 4 stitches, 2 hdc in each of the next 2 stitches, hdc next 38, 2 hdc in each of the next 2 stitches, hdc in final stitch of round.

Round 4: hdc first 4 stitches, 2 hdc in each of the next 2 stitches, hdc next 39, 2 hdc each of the next 2 stitches, hdc next 6, 2 hdc each of the next 2 stitches, hdc next 39, 2 hdc each of the next 2 stitches, hdc final 2 stitches of round.

Change to Color 2.

Round 5 – Round 8: hdc in each stitch around. At the end of round 8, slst to first stitch of the round.

Change to color 1.

Round 9: ch 6 (counts as first trc and ch space here and throughout), skip first 4 stitches of round, *trc next stitch, ch 3, skip 3 stitches* repeat * to * around to final 3 stitches of round, trc in next stitch, ch 3, skip 2 stitches, slst to 3rd chain of starting chain.

Round 10 – Round 11: ch 6, skip 4 stitches, *trc, ch 3, skip chains of previous round* repeat * to * around.

Change to Color 2.

Round 12 – Round 14: repeat round 10 pattern.

Change to Color 1.

Round 15 – Round 17: repeat round 10 pattern.

Change to Color 2.

Round 18: ch 1, sc around working in every chain and stitch of round 17. (106 stitches)

Round 19 – Round 20: sc in each stitch around.

Round 21: sc first 15 stitches, we will now create the first strap, *sc next 5, ch 1, turn* repeat * to * 45 times, skip next 20 stitches of round 20, slst 5 to unworked stitches of strap 1 to round 20 of bag, sc next 23 stitches of round 20, we will now create the second strap, *sc next 5, ch 1, turn* repeat * to * 45 times, skip next 20 stitches of round 20, slst 5 to unworked stitches of strap 2 to round 20 of bag, sc last 8 stitches of round 20, slst to first stitch of round.

Fasten off.

You can switch up the color changes to make different patterns as well!
